SOUNDTRACK FOR THE WEEKEND !!!

This weeks soundtrack for the weekend has been released today by Champion, mixing the best in UK Funky, Bashment, RnB & Hip Hop!!!

Better known for his work with Addictive, I managed to catch up with DJ Champion the producer behind there summer hit 'Bad Girls'

LL: Can you give readers a bit of background history to yourself?
C: Well Leon, my name is Champion and I’m from Hackney, East London. I have been producing for about 4/5 years now and have been I’ve dj’ing for about 9 years in total. Before I started doing funky in late 2007, I got to grips with the whole concept of dj’ing from an early age helping my dad power his sound system. I was taught to mix by ‘Serious One’ and i began to get a local following, so I still work alongside the sound as I used to produce grime tracks for local mc’s back in they day.

LL:With the rising in popularity of UK Funky and its surface into the mainstream how do you feel that the scene is doing in general at the moment?
C: I think a lot of the stupidity that clouded the scene at one point has been filtered out now to be fair, and the scene has now gone back into a pure state in terms of the production and vocals. There is now a lot more room for new artists to come through and there is a lot more platforms for our stuff to get heard now whereas before it was a madness to even hear good underground tracks on radio 1!

LL:When did you realise that people were taking a real interest in your production skills and start taking music seriously?
C: Probably in early 2009, when I got a call out of nowhere from Marc Ryder about sending him some of my material and he was told me how an instance occurred in Birmingham with DJ Pioneer playing 'Tribal Affair’. Apparently before the tune even dropped people were going nuts and it got a couple of reloads! Again when I first met DJ Cameo, he was told me that 'Motherboard' got crazy reloads at BBC Electric Proms! I was so shocked that my music was reaching out like that!

LL:We also understand that this summer has also been very successful for you, achieving a massive summer hit with 'Bad Girls' Ft Addictive. Is there any chance of a release date?
C: It’s still being spoken about at the moment, so I can’t reveal too much but you can expect big things soon regarding that particular track.

LL: Are there any artists that are particularly standing out for you at the moment, and is there anybody that you would like to work with?
C: If I am honest, I think I am quite critical, but there are quite a few people doing well with things at the moment. I’d like to shout out Labrinth who is also from Hackney doing a complete madness at the moment! People like to big up Mz Bratt, Redlight & DJ Naughty's are also going on bad within the scene ad I’d also like to shout out Wireless Sound. As for people I want to work with, I’d probably say Redlight, but I’d love to work with the likes of Skepta too! I've always said I want to work with sticky as well! Also shout bamboss again from hackney going in hard!

LL: A lot of people seem to love your style of UK Funky at the moment and this has resulted in a growing fan base outside of London has there been any raves that have really stood out for you in the past year?
C: The MYHOUSE raves in Birmingham are always a lot, but I did a booking in Leeds with DJ Mystery and that was big too! HEY SEXY in Ayia Napa was crazy as well!

LL:Well thank you for taking time out to talk to us Champion, is there anything else you would like to add finally?
C: Yeah i’d just a quick thanks to everybody that likes and supports what I'm doing! Big up all the up & coming DJ’s & producers, I will definitely load every DJ up with tunes when the times right lol. I’d also like to shout out my team up at NVA Management/2NV Records.

LOOK OUT FOR THE ‘LIGHTER EP' AND THE RELEASE OF ‘BAD GIRL’ Ft ADDICTIVE REAL SOON!!
